Is Satire Saving Our Nation? Mockery and American Politics

Date & Time: January 23, 2015 | 12:30 AM – 12:30 AM

Location: Lewis Katz Building Auditorium

A discussion with the authors, Sophia McClennen, professor of international affairs and comparative literature, and Remy Maisel ’14 about their new book. The discussion will be moderated by Cynthia Simmons, senior lecturer in the College of Communications and Penn State Law affiliate faculty member.

In their new book, McClennen and Maisel argue that as millennials enter the voting pool, they predominantly watch the news in the form of satire, instead of cable news, and this is changing politics. While political satire has always existed alongside American politics, the authors point out that news parody shows are making more of an impact on millenial viewers, redifining how they engage in voting and politics.

Reception to follow. Please RSVP if you're planning to attend the reception.
