The Paris Attacks: A Discussion

The Penn State School of International Affairs is hosting an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 19) in the Sutliff Auditorium (rm. 118) of the Lewis Katz Building in University Park. “The Paris Attacks: A Discussion” is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
Five Penn State experts will join moderator Scott Sigmund Gartner, director of the School of International Affairs and an adviser to a the U.S. agency facilitating the assessment of violent non-state actors, to talk about the Paris attacks, public and state responses to terrorism, and the tactics used by terrorists.
Joining Gartner on the panel are:
- Jennifer Boittin, associate professor of French, Francophone studies and history, whose research focuses on France in an international context;
- Joseph DeThomas, professor of international affairs and retired U.S. ambassador, who spent 32 years in the State Department;
- Pete Hatemi, professor of political science, who teaches The Politics of Terrorism;
- Carleen Maitland, associate professor of information sciences and technology and co-director of the Institute for Information Policy, whose expertise includes technology use for and by refugees and international communications; and
- Catherine Rogers, professor of law and Paul and Marjorie Price Faculty Scholar at Penn State Law, affiliate faculty at the School of International Affairs, and a scholar of international law and dispute resolution.
Following the panel discussion, the speakers will take questions from the audience.
PARKING
Limited parking is available in the Katz Building's parking lot. Students who do not have Katz lot permits and members of the public must pay for parking until 5 p.m. at the payment kiosk located on the north side of the lot, adjacent to the IM fields. Penn State faculty and staff permits are valid the Katz Orange lot. Additional paid parking is available in the East Deck on Bigler Road, across Park Avenue from the Katz Building.
