Law and international affairs journal hosts symposium on global data privacy
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Journal of Law and International Affairs (JLIA) held its annual spring symposium on March 19, 2022, on the topic of global data privacy. The symposium featured three expert speakers with diverse data privacy backgrounds who covered a wide range of issues related to the topic.
The guest speakers were:
- Kellye Gordon, vice president of ethics and compliance and legal operations at VF Corporation and adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Law. Gordon spoke on training, awareness, reporting, and issue-spotting from a corporate-employee engagement perspective;
- Peter Margulies, professor of law at Roger Williams University School of Law and an expert on national security law with an extensive background in immigration law. Margulies discussed an article he co-authored, "Risk and Rights in Transatlantic Data Transfers: EU Privacy Law, U.S. Surveillance, and the Search for Common Ground"; and
- Amelia Vance, adjunct professor of law at Penn State Law in University Park and director of youth and education privacy at the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF). Vance is a globally recognized expert in child and student privacy and she spoke on current issues around child privacy.
A question-and-answer session followed each speaker’s presentation.
“JLIA was honored to host these leaders for our spring symposium to explore the very timely topic of global data privacy,” said Brea Jones, a third-year law student at Penn State Law and JLIA’s managing editor of communications. “The speakers come from a wide range of fields and their knowledge of data privacy and compliance led to an engaging discussion and thought-provoking questions from symposium attendees.”
